When I first hit Ann Arbor in 82 and played a gig at Joe's Star Lounge, Niagara showed up. I was stunned as I had known of Niagara as motor city sweetheart for years, and along with the Stooges, she embodied the trans love energy of Detroit. She was the real deal, real rock n roll USA. And her presence was a commitment for me to forever kick out the motherfucking jams. Niagara is forever. -Thurston Moore, SONIC YOUTH "A fast-paced think piece that straddles the parallel universes of art & music" -Jamie O'Shea, editor Juxtapoz Magazine "It was what it was, it is what it is" -Ron Asheton, guitarist DESTROY ALL MONSTERS & THE STOOGES "A fascinating document, a must for any cultural archivist" -John Holmstrom, founder of PUNK Magazine, writer High Times Here's a review in the March 2006 issue of JUXTAPOZ:

THE
SILVER OPIUM SERIES
![]() For Immediate Release For the first time in nearly three years CPOP Gallery is thrilled to announce the return of one of Detroit s most popular and internationally recognized artists of the last decade, and the signature artist who helped put CPOP on the map- the one and only Niagara. It s a one-woman exhibition in which she unveils the most recent works in her evolving series entitled, In Opium Dreams, as well as the release of her new hardcover retrospective bio/art book, Beyond The Pale from 9mm Press. Commencing with an opening soiree on Saturday, October 15 from 7 PM until 11PM, with a special invite-only buyers preview from 6 PM until 7 PM, the exhibit will run through the end of November. The Artist will preside over the opening night festivities to sign and personalize copies of her book. As the avant-garde chanteuse with the now legendary Destroy All Monsters (which spawned such art novas as Mike Kelly and Jim Shaw, and included guitar innovator, Ron Asheton and his brother Scott from The Stooges), Niagara charted new territories, pushing the boundaries of punk into sublime abstraction while peers such as Debbie Harry and Patti Smith exploited it's commercial side. DAM fearlessly dove headfirst into the dark murky waters of both musical and commercial uncertainty. By eschewing the pop format for noise, sexiness and artless abandonment, Niagara and mates solidified their place as true pioneers of art/noise rock. Along the way of these rock-diva exploits she became a famous painter. Melding a sincerely Warholian aesthetic with a post-pulp style Niagara portrayed a hard-boiled world where out-of-control women are in control. Niagara's femme dominated world-view and a bold, emotional, even violent palette of angry reds and near-death knell blues caught the attention of not only Detroiters, but also art lovers around the world. Exhibits outside of Detroit followed in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Sydney and back around to San Francisco and Dallas, which were all smashing successes. The Niagara-girl was the dangerous debutante of the late 20th Century, a product of the Me-Generation with a decidedly Why-Generation orientation. Producing cultural and artistic icons of mass appeal can be nicely rewarding. It also can become boring and redundant? the challenge met? now what? She depicted the modern American female anti-hero as beautiful, strong, violent, and a little bit nuts, in other words? irresistible. But as all things in the temporal world will do, they evolve? even the Niagara-girl. In Opium Dreams presents the Niagara-girl all grown up. Bored with the messy violence and its accoutrements, Niagara has traded in the Mossburg streetsweeper for the lure of the poppy. Her once bold lines have been delicately refined through a sensitive hand, and the lighter touch is now embellished with exotic eastern appliqué and silver or gold leaf, while the colors, though more subdued, still convey dark emotion. In these newer works, less is even more, through an intoxicating balance of flash and filigree, which her earlier work never really touched on. So in a word, Niagara s work has matured, conceptually, stylistically and commercially. Madison Avenue and Hollywood have utilized her work to increase the mass-appeal and street-cred of their own product. Coffee cups bear her images, as do T-shirts, panties, zippo lighters and other rive gauche accessories for both men and women. In Opium Dreams finds Niagara at a creative crossroads; confident to now let her works do the talking, while scaling back on the image making process. Without a doubt this current series the most involved and important work of her career. It s somewhat a return to her beginnings with DAM- pushing artistic and social limits. It s only about the painting now. Her personal anarchy has evolved into a justly deserved nihilism. As every great artist knows, the conflict is within, not without. So maybe in the true Midwest punk tradition, it's really a de-evolution.
